Used BMW 525

The BMW 525 is a mid-size executive car and is the entry point of the 5 series of BMW. The 525 has defined performance sedans since its inception in 1973 as a meager 2.5L I6. Times sure have changed! The 525 had several models and iterations since the 70s and is one of the most prolific BMWs ever produced. It remained in production until 2007, when it was surpassed by the 528i. There were several different 525 models over the years – the 525i, 525td, 525tds, 525iX and the diesel 525d.

Other than the 325/328 models, the 525/528 is one of the most popular models produced, so you will have no problem finding a good supply of used vehicles to choose from. If you are in a bidding mood, you can find them at a local or online auction as well. The 525 and 5 series models in general have always been a very solid choice for a BMW platform – having more power and elegance than the 3 series but still remaining affordable in comparison to the astronomical cost of the 7 series and M series cars. This is what Road & Track had to say about the 525: “The front strut and rear multilink suspensions soak up the imperfections on the asphalt with poise”. Most owners have agreed that the 5 series is renowned for its handling characteristics as well as for being a very sporty and enthusiastic sedan.

Over the years, there have been several competitors to the 5 series and the 525 in particular, namely from Audi, Acura, Cadillac and, of course, Mercedes Benz. It is hard to make wide, sweeping judgments over cars that have spanned several decades of production, but the BMW 525 has remained an extremely solid competitor, leading the pack since its introduction. Though no longer available, yielding its presence to the improved 528i, the 525 largely remains intact today, with very few major differences other than incremental refinements that occur from year to year. You can’t go wrong purchasing a new 528i or going with a used 525 as long as you do your research and make sure to get the model and drivetrain that you desire.
