Used BMW M3
The BMW M3 is the highest performing car in the 3 series line, or the lowest performing in the M series line, depending on how you look at it. There are various models of the M3, the sedan, the coupe and the convertible version, but all sport the same 414 hp V8 powerhouse. Also in the M series line are the M3s bigger brothers, the M5 sedan, the M6 coupe and the M6 convertible, all sporting a 5.0L 500 hp V10 powerplant.
The M3 dates back to 1986, when the first updated E30 3-Series had the name “M3”. It was introduced with a 2.3L inline 4 cylinder motor that was a completely custom work of art, adopting features from the M1 head and valve train designs. For such a small motor, it delivered impressive performance for the era. The original M3 really showed its racing heritage and was aggressively campaigned by the racing team. Many often thank Mercedes Benz for the release of the M3, because had it not been for the incredible success of the Mercedes Benz W201 190E with its 2.3L 16V motor, the M3 likely would not have been developed.
Today’s M3s strut much more refinement than muscle, even though they still are racing cars at heart and pump out an astounding 414 hp. However, what is more apparent is just how refined and smooth that power is melded into the overall luxury sedan design. There are a few competitors to the M3 that you may want to take a look at as well – the Audi S4, the Chevrolet Corvette, the Mercedes Benz CLK550 and the very refined Mercedes Benz SLK55 AMG. M3s have been around for quite awhile, which makes them fairly easy to come across on the used car market and at auction circuits as well. They are much more popular than there bigger brothers, the M5 and M6, mainly because due to pricing issues.
If you do choose to buy a used BMW M3, you should definitely steer towards getting a factory “certified” car as opposed to just buying one off of Joe’s used car lot. These are very sophisticated cars and having that added assurance and warranty provided by the factory certification process is extremely important. Like any M series BMW, you should expect much lower fuel economy and higher maintenance and repair costs. Unfortunately, that is the price you pay for performance.
