Used BMW M5
The M series of BMW has long been the pride and joy of the company – its enduring sign of high-end performance and racing lineage. The current M series line continues that same history, and as each new model year seems to do, improves upon it even further. The BMW M5 is no exception. It is available only as a 4 door sedan, even though there are several other M series models to choose from, including the M3 coupe, M3 sedan, M3 convertible, M6 coupe and the M6 convertible. Of course, the M3 variations are built on the smaller 3 series cars and have a lower performance than the M5 and M6 models, which sport 500hp V10s.
The M series is not for everyone. First of all, these are the crème of the crop when it comes to high-end performance vehicles. With that high-end performance come many downsides, such as cost of maintenance, insurance, fuel economy and other factors. The M series, like the Z series, is a niche market car – not designed for the general public but for the true sports sedan aficionado. If pure adrenaline packing performance is what you’re looking for, then start with the M series. They have been around since the mid 1980s, so there are plenty around on the used car market. If you can’t spring the $85,500 for a new BMW M5, you can always find more affordable used versions. This is a car that you should definitely buy as a “factory certified” used car, however, as it is a pretty tightly wound beast and fairly expensive to repair – having that added dealer backing of quality and warranty would be highly advisable. Keep in mind, as well, who the people who buy them and like to drive them are, so you really want to have the car inspected by a trained BMW professional to make sure that the car hasn’t been driven hard and abused.
In general, you will find that most of the M series cars on the used marketplace will have lower miles and better condition than an average 3 or 5 series BMW. As the M series attracts a higher end buyer, they are traditionally maintained to higher standards. Also, as the M series is a specialty niche car, you will likely find that they have depreciated quite a bit and have fairly affordable used prices.
