Used BMW X3
The BMW X3, like its bigger brothers the X5 and X6, is a non-traditional cross over vehicle – part car, part wagon, part SUV – what BMW calls a SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle). The X3 is based on the 3 series platform and there is just one single model available, which comes with a 3.0 liter inline 6 cylinder motor that has 260 hp.
The X3 SAV debuted at the Detroit auto show in 2003 and quickly rolled out soon thereafter (as did the X5). This crossover is a different type of vehicle. Traditional SUVs were more of a luxury truck, using truck suspensions and platforms but refined interior and creature comforts. This new generation could probably best be described as a modern day sports wagon. It is similar to a wagon when it comes to seating, but the car rides higher and has some of the SUV sports packages for suspension, all wheel drive and so on. It is perfectly comfortable for the city, around town or even if you’re interested in heading out to the mountains. It is not a true 4x4 truck, so a comparison to one would not make any sense. Trucks are true utility vehicles and SUVs tried to bridge that utility with sport, but they still leaned pretty heavily towards the utility side of the equation. To many, the crossover is the perfect blend of all: adequate seating, adequate comfort and style, sporty and yet refined. To others, it is a compromise of everything and doesn’t specialize in anything. You will have to be the judge of which category you fall into.
The X series has been on the market since 2003, so there are several of them available on the used and auction markets, should you choose to go that route. They are typically family vehicles and used accordingly, with the average mileage and the average wear and tear that normal family life inflicts. As always, if you’re looking for that perfect used vehicle, you are best off looking at the “certified” models available directly from the dealerships. A certified used vehicle will cost you more, but you will have added assurances of extra inspections and factory certification, as well as extended warranty options that would not be made available to most used vehicle owners. There are more options in the X series line (like the X5) if you’re looking for more performance, but as a very solid mid class crossover, you should have no reason to look beyond the X3.
