Used BMW X5
The BMW X5 debuted in 1999 and is still being produced today in the mid-size crossover SAV category, just like its sibling (the BMW X3). As crossovers and SUVs were very popular in this era, its introduction was very logical, but it certainly was a new vehicle style entirely for BMW. Currently, for the 2009 model year, there are three different choices available: the X5 30i, the X5 48i and the X5 35d. The base model has a 260 hp engine, the 48i has an upgraded 350 hp engine and the 35d has a brand new 265 hp diesel variant engine.
The crossover market was new indeed. The concept of a crossover was a cross between an SUV and a car, which BMW named an SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle) instead of the SUV nomenclature. Up until this point, SUVs were essentially prettied up trucks with the creature comforts of a car. They were built on truck frames, with truck motors and just about anything else you could imagine. The crossover was a sedan at heart, with that flare for the fun and looks of an SUV but more of the practical traditional roles of the sedan.
The BMW X5 is an all-wheel drive SAV and has come with a range of different engine options over the years, from gasoline powered inline-6s and V8s to the newest engine option introduced in 2009, the more economical diesel version. Make sure to check into the year and engine combination on whichever model you choose, because there are lots of different combinations and you want to make sure that you’re getting what you want. If you’re going to purchase a used vehicle, you should really consider a factory “certified” car as your top option. It will cost you more, but it’ll be well worth it to have that extra warranty and factory backing of quality.
The BMW X5 is a good find on the used market and don’t forget to look for an auction listing on it as well. As the vehicle has been in production since 1999, there are many of them on the road and their value remains strong. As a whole, this entire class of vehicles has suffered pretty dramatically from the downturn of the US economy and the shift to more economical transportation. That is good news if you’re looking to pick one of the X5s up used, because you can find some excellent buys.
