Used BMW Z4
The BMW Z4 is a great sporty and fun roaster that started out as a Z3 back in 2002 and is still available today as the Z4 30i and Z4 35i models – both convertible roadsters. The coupe version of the Z4 and the Z4-M (higher performance) versions of this class are no longer available, but the remaining 35i model still packs a pretty good punch for such a small car, at 300hp. All versions of the car are rear-wheel drive 2-seaters, so don’t think that bringing along the family in this little baby is an option.
The Z4 and the previous Z3 have enjoyed limited success during the past several years. This is not a testament to the vehicles or the company, as it is simply something common for such a niche car. Its lack of practicality relinquishes it to the role of a weekend or third car, and given today’s economic situation, many are opting to either let go of such luxuries or not purchase them. The used market and auction markets for the Z4 are fairly full of options for this niche, so you should be able to pick one up fairly affordably. Furthermore, since convertibles are not driven nearly as much as most cars, you’re likely to find a very pristine low mileage car.
BMW has tried to make this car more of what it is: fun to drive. They have added what they refer to as DDC or Dynamic Drive Control to the Z4, allowing for three different tunable suspension and handling settings: from Normal, to Sport and to Sport +. In other words, it’s possible for you to continuously play around with it. For your average running around town, you’ll just want to leave the Z4 on its default setting of “Normal”, which provides a bit of a softer and more forgiving ride, perfect for pot-hole invested city driving. When you get away for the weekend and go up to the mountains or out to the coast, you’ll definitely appreciate experimenting around with the Sport and Sport+ DDC suspension settings. While not the most practical BMW car out there, the BMW Z4 was never even intended to come with such a quality. It was intended to be energetic, exhilarating, fun – anything but common and boring – and on that front, it thoroughly delivers. If the utmost in performance is what you carve, look for the Z4-M model on the used market.
